Crooked Spire Church

St. Mary and All Saints Church was dedicated in 1234; it's main structure completed in the 1370's; and the lead-coated spire added c1400.

This sketch, dated 24.8.1824, made from the top of Tapton Lane, shows some of the old cottages in St. Mary's Gate; which were taken down do the Churchyard could be enlarged.

The high wall on the left enclosed a large brick house of Robert Malkin, a retired Irish linen merchant: It was later occupied by Dr. Booth, & was pulled down in the 1870's to make a better approach to the station.

The coloured postcard on the left is dated May 24th 1905.

The black & white photo shows the demolition of the wall in progress.

This coloured card is dated 26th February 1914.
