These are a few postcards & images that don't warrant a thread of their own but may be of interest to some?
Below is Barbara Hepworth's sculpture "Rosewall". It weighs approx 2 1/2 tons & is made from nebrasina stone.
The sculpture was commissioned by the Post Office using public funds in 1963 to mark the migration of the Post Office Accountant General's Department, (A.G.D.), to Chesterfield in 1963; & stood in the town, outside the 'A.G.D.' for 40 years. It went to Yorkshire, in 2003, to be in an exhibition of Hepworth's work, to mark her birth, but didn't return to its place in Chesterfield.
In 2005 it turned up in Bonhams catalogue to be auctioned, & the price it might've fetched was upward of £600,000. This caused a furore in Parliament & the Chesterfield Council. The Royal Mail withdrew it from auction but still wanted one million pounds from the Art Fund & local council.
The Royal Mail eventually settled for £5000,000.
It can now be seen, July 2019, behind the offices on Future Walk, before you get to the bridge; but there are plans to move it to the Waterside project.
Below left is where it stood outside the A.G.D. in a pool of water; & below left is where it stands today.
Above on the left is the old bus station on Beetwell Street; & on the right, above, the new bus station. The shopping area at the top of the photos has been re-developed too, & is now the Ravenside Retail Park. The road where the red car is parked is lower Tontine Road; Beetwell Street is across the bottom of the photo out of view, & Markham Road is where the dark coloured car is, across the bottom. Castle Yard runs down the other side of the bus station opposite Tontine.
Below are two views of Tapton Lane; the old one on the left is c/o Jim Green, with thanks.
Below left is a Chesterfield Transport Centenary bus 1881-1982 - Hollis Lane; & the bottom of Park Road c1910.
