The earlier Recreation Ground was on the bottom of Wheeldon Lane, in the 'Dog Kennels', close to the river Hipper until (as far as I can make out) c1859. It was a place where various activities took place & the main sport was cricket: The headquarters of the cricket team being at the Castle Inn, on Low Pavement. There was talk in 1859 of making a bowling green out of the - former - cricket ground.
The Recreation Ground removed to the Saltergate area, where Tennyson Avenue is now sited, from 1859 until 1871 when a new Ground was opened at the side of the old one - where the old football ground was on Saltergate.
